Guadalupe Centers was proud to partner with Mattie Rhodes Center, El Centro Inc., The Mexican Consulate in Kansas City, and UnidosUS–a National Latino Organization–for a vibrant community Back-to-School Drive, helping students start the school year strong and prepare for success.
On August 4, 2025, our main administrative building became a hub of excitement and support as we distributed 1,000 fully stocked backpacks and brand-new shoes to local students. This collaborative effort took place during the same busy week as the annual UnidosUS Conference here in Kansas City, creating a unique opportunity for out-of-state supporters to contribute directly to our community. Families also received hygiene kits from Heart to Heart International, fresh produce and health screenings courtesy of University Health KC, and access to valuable community resources, including educational materials and family support services.
“Our goal is to make sure students return to school prepared, confident, and ready to succeed,” said Leo Prieto, Chief Community Officer at Guadalupe Centers. “Through collaboration with local and national partners, we’re easing the back-to-school burden for families and building stronger communities.”
Amazon added to the fun by setting up an on-site library in the Center’s courtyard, inviting students to take home as many books as they wished, completely free of charge. The library also featured a station where children could create their bookmarks to pair with their new reads.
As a special treat, raffle prizes were offered throughout the event, ranging from gift cards to brand-new bikes. One memorable winner was a former GCI Summer School participant who had taken part in our Bike Program, where students learned to ride safely and practice essential biking skills. While participants in that program were set to receive a bike at the end, this student unfortunately missed out at the time. At the Back-to-School Drive, his mother and he celebrated together when his raffle ticket was drawn, earning him his long-awaited bike.
This special day was made possible thanks to the generosity of our sponsors—Bank of America and GEICO—for providing the backpacks and shoes, as well as Amazon for their additional support. We are deeply grateful to our partners, sponsors, supporters, and the dedicated volunteers who made this event a success!
